  5.     The final public release of the "ISO Development Environment" will be
  6.     available on June 19th 1992.  This release is called
  7.  
  8.                    ISODE-8.0
  9.  
  10.     This software supports the development of certain kinds of OSI protocols
  11.     and applications.  Here are the details: 
  12.  
  13.   - The ISODE is not proprietary, but it is not in the public domain.  This was
  14.     necessary to include a "hold harmless" clause in the release.  The upshot
  15.     of all this is that anyone can get a copy of the release and do anything
  16.     they want with it, but no one takes any responsibility whatsoever for any
  17.     (mis)use.

  19.   - The ISODE runs on native Berkeley and AT&T System V systems
  20.     in addition to various other UNIX-like operating systems.  No kernel
  21.     modifications are required.

  23.   - The modules include:
  24.     OSI transport service (TP0 on top of TCP, X.25 and CONS; TP4
  25.         for SunLink OSI)
  26.     OSI session, presentation, and association control services
  27.     ASN.1 abstract syntax/transfer notation tools, including:
  28.         remote operations stub-generator (front-end for remote operations)
  29.         structure-generator (ASN.1 to C)
  30.         element-parser (basic encoding rules)
  31.     OSI reliable transfer and remote operations services
  32.     OSI directory services
  33.     OSI file transfer, access and management
  34.     FTAM/FTP gateway
  35.     OSI virtual terminal (basic class, TELNET profile)

  37.   - ISODE Final consists of final "IS" level implementations with the
  38.     exception of VT which is a DIS implementation.  The ISODE also 
  39.     contains implementations of the 1984 X.400 versions of ROS and RTS.

  41.   - The discussion group ISODE@NISC.SRI.COM is used as an open forum on ISODE.

  44.   - The primary documentation for this release consists of an update to the
  45.     ISODE 7.0 manual.  The ISODE 7.0 manual consists of a five volume
  46.     User's Manual (approx. 1000 pages) and a set of UNIX manual pages.  The
  47.     sources to the User's Manual are in LaTeX format.  In addition, there are
  48.     a number of notes, papers, and presentations included in the documentation
  49.     set, again in either LaTeX or SLiTeX format.

  55.     DISTRIBUTION SITES
  56.  
  57.     The FTP or FTAM distributions of ISODE-8.0 consists of 3 files.  
  58.     The source code and update documentation for the ISODE-8.0
  59.     distribution is in the file isode-8.tar.Z which is
  60.     approximately 5.5MB in size.

  62.     LaTeX source for the entire document set can be found
  63.     in the isode-7-doc.tar.Z file (3.5MB).  A list of documents can be
  64.     found in the doc/ directory of the source tree.

  66.     A Postscript version of the five volume manual can be found in the
  67.     isode-7-ps.tar.Z file (4.3MB), and the update document in the
  68.     isode-8.ps.Z file (120KB).

  72.     If you can FTP to the Internet, then use anonymous FTP to uu.psi.com
  73.     [136.161.128.3] to retrieve the files in BINARY mode from the
  74.     isode/ directory.

  76.  2. NIFTP
  77.     If you run NIFTP over the public X.25 or over JANET, and are registered in
  78.     the NRS at Salford, you can use NIFTP with username "guest" and your own
  79.     name as password, to access UK.AC.UCL.CS to retrieve the files
  80.     from the <SRC> directory

  82.  3. FTAM on the JANET, IXI or PSS
  83.     The sources are available by FTAM from UCL over X.25 using 
  84.     JANET (DTE 00000511160013), 
  85.     IXI   (DTE 20433450420113) or 
  86.     PSS   (DTE 23421920030013) 
  87.     all with TSEL "259" (ASCII encoding).  
  88.     (This service is registered under "ucl, gb" in the OSI Directory).
  89.     Use the "anon" user-identity and retrieve the files from the 
  90.     src/ directory. 
  91.     The file service is provided by the FTAM implementation in
  92.     ISODE 6.0 or later (IS FTAM).

  96.     ISODE CONSORTIUM
  97.  
  98.     The ISODE Consortium is a not-for-profit cooperative enterprise, whose
  99.     mission is to promote and develop the ISODE package of OSI (Open
  100.     System Interconnection) applications, which has been used extensively
  101.     in the research community.  The ISODE Consortium will be able to
  102.     evolve the ISODE software more rapidly than would be possible for any
  103.     single member.  This will be to the mutual benefit of members of the
  104.     consortium, and will help to stimulate the market for OSI, which
  105.     is key technology to enable open communication between and within
  106.     organisations.  Membership of the ISODE Consortium is open to any
  107.     organisation in any country.

  109.     The ISODE Consortium releases of ISODE will be made exclusively
  110.     available to the ISODE Consortium members or by purchase of products
  111.     from ISODE Consortium members.  Academic organisations, and not for
  112.     profit or government organisations with research as their primary
  113.     purpose, will be given zero cost access to the ISODE Consortium
  114.     releases, on the basis of simply signing a licence with minimal
  115.     administrative overhead.  This builds on a major strength of the
  116.     ISODE package by facilitating use of ISODE within the research
  117.     community, whilst allowing ISODE to evolve as a product base.

  119.     The ISODE Consortium has mailing lists for bug reports relating to the
  120.     ISODE Package.   These are:

  128.     welcome.   Changes will be incorporated into the ISODE Consortium
